SUSAN FAUX
Susan is best known for her direct and emotive large scale portrait nudes, exhibited during the 1990’s in competitive exhibitions such as the BP Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery London, (1993, 1994 and 1995) and the Nat West Prize for Art London (1992). More recently she has exhibited locally at the Mount House Gallery, Marlborough (2003), the PACT centre Pewsey (2005) and Great Western Hospital (2007). In 2008 she also exhibited in the Jersey Arts Centre, Channel Islands.
The paintings shown here are autobiographical portraits, exploring the emotions and experiences behind different life events. They have been instrumental in securing many private commissions from families and individuals who are also looking to record important moments in their own lives.
More recently her paintings have moved towards more large scale site specific pieces that explore shared community histories and experience, exploring the relationship between events such as carnival and the ancient and modern iconography they juxtapose. She is currently working on a body of work exploring the Death Dances of the baroque period, funeral practice in medieval Britain and their relationship with modern mosaic profiling and social grouping. These works are intended to be completed by December 2010.
These paintings have been shown extensively, from Aberdeen, London and Aberystwyth. However this exhibition marks there retirement, they will not be shown in public again. The creation of the death Dances in 2010 heralds a new phase in this artists life and a new and different body of work.
